Now that winter is officially here in the southern hemisphere, there is no denying it. Darkness is falling at 5pm and my heater is on blast beside me as I write this.
One of the things I love so much about living at the end of the earth, on the cusp of the Antarctic sea, is that the cold is no surprise. Like, I didn’t move to Nipaluna expecting to sip on coconuts in 100% humidity.
Sure, there was a teething period, a weaning off the temperate climate I’d lived in for over two decades; times when Sas and I questioned our choices. But I like to think we’ve now surrendered.
The way Nipaluna embraces winter with the epic goth festival Dark Mofo makes me so happy. I’m much too much of a grandma to go to anything super cool, but I’m enough of a goth to love the atmosphere and way that the city is cloaked in black, with shimmering red lights, fire pits and artistic endeavours across town.
We’ve been watching everything get set up the last few weeks, and I’ve been prepping and rehearsing with my creative sister Kiki DeLux for our sold out DARK YOGA event (on tonight!). If you missed out this time, we will definitely run another next year. As Altered States, we have more exciting events coming out in the near future. Stay tuned…
kālī durge namo namah
jaya mātā kālī jai mātā durge
This is the mantra we will be chanting tonight to invite the dark, the shadow; embracing change and transformation whether wanted or not.
For us in the southern hemisphere, winter is here whether we like it not. So why resist? Why try to fight it?
Give in to Kālī.
Embrace the dark and surrender.
