A Beginner’s Guide

  • 28 November 2021
  • Beginners, General, Guide

As a beginner, it can be challenging to follow yoga purely through audio instruction.

We live in a highly visual world (right now you are most likely reading this on a brightly lit screen), and we even have expressions in our vernacular that say “seeing is believing”, which places emphasis on sight high above our other senses.

In traditional Hatha Yoga (the origin of modern postural yoga), the goal of the practice was to refine our listening skills, in order to hear what is known as the Anāhata Nadam, the unstruck sound. Everything is our world is made up of vibration and we would derive great benefit from become better listeners; better able to hear the soft whisperings of our needs and desires, as well as the needs of others, and the sound of the earth below our feet. It is for this reason that the recordings in the Class Library on this website are audio only, without visual demonstration. As with anything, our skills improve over time through repetition, and what may at first require a lot of focus will in time become second nature (remember when you first learnt to ride a bike?). Having said this, it is of course helpful to start with shorter, more accessible practices, and then build up to longer practices with more challenging āsanas.

Here is a list of the most Beginner-friendly classes in the Audio Library, in order of how I suggest someone newer to the practice should practice them. This list will be updated as new classes are added regularly.

Did you know I teach online classes on a weekly ba Did you know I teach online classes on a weekly basis?

You can either join me live on Fridays at 9.30am (Sydney time), or catch the replays any time after. The recordings are added to an online library that currently has over 300 classes.

Perfect for when you’re travelling, if you’re a home practitioner, looking for a more affordable way to practice, or simply prefer the flexibility of online classes.

Here is my online schedule for May, and the second slide shows the last two classes I taught online.

Okay so here’s the big DOUBLE announcement: Kei Okay so here’s the big DOUBLE announcement:

Keith Kempis of @bija_yoga and I have been working on a #podcast called #notjustasana for the last 2 months and TODAY is the launch date.

This is the premise: every episode of the weekly show will start with a #slokah #sutra or #chant and it’s always a surprise to the other pod-host. We then explore it together; basically an extended dharma talk in the form of a conversation. First two episodes are out now!

Secondly, Keith and I are going to Thailand 21-28 October and we would love you to come with us! #yoga #food #adventures #seva in #khaolak Thailand during the #phuketvegetarianfestival. Basically like White Lotus Season 3 except BETTER.

FYI Last year, this trip with Keith sold out in 3 days. 🙏🌴🌞 #thailand #yoga
